Guildford Philharmonic  “ Respighi was not only a great orchestrator but a great tunesmith as well, and the performance of The Pines of Rome bore this out. There were some lovely solos from the woodwind. The depiction of the catacombs, with the quasi-plainsong melodies, was particularly moving, and the approach of the Roman legions along the Appian Way, imposing and thrilling indeed.
